About ENPs
For over 27,000 NPs providing emergency care in the United States, significant practice challenges exist because the scope of ENP practice is not entirely encompassed within one of the currently defined six population foci of the Consensus Model for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Regulation's recommendations. In response, AAENP is teaming up with its members and partners to shift the ENP from a specialty to a population. For further details, check out the resources below.
ENP Position Statement
It is the position of AAENP that the patient population served by the ENP represents a unique and significantly differentiated set of competencies and behaviors from other APRN population foci. Therefore, in collaboration with our national colleagues and regulatory stakeholders, AAENP supports the development of an ENP population.

Specialty versus Population Talking Points
Healthcare dynamics shift according to patient & population needs, pushing ENPs to adapt to the varying levels of complexity in emergency care settings.

Roadmap to a Population
The work to explore and ultimately support the ENP as a population has occurred over several years and involved many stakeholders and organizations. This infographic represents a high-level overview of selected initiatives in this process.

NP Delivery of Emergency Care in the U.S.
Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) are an essential component of the emergency care workforce. They provide emergency care to patients presenting with diverse and undifferentiated presentations. In the U.S., almost 80% of EDs utilize NPs and physician assistants to provide care.

Competencies
To demonstrate the connections and attainment of NP core and Emergency NP competencies, the ENP competencies in this document are presented in graphic format depicting the alignment with core NP knowledge and expanded knowledge to the Emergency NP competencies.

ENP Practice Toolkit
The American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP) Practice Committee developed this toolkit to serve as a resource and guiding document for nurse practitioners in emergency care. The toolkit offers an overview of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role, education, certification, licensure, and utilization of nurse practitioners in emergency care to their full potential.

Explore the Advanced Practice Nursing Regulation Model
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) have expanded in numbers and capabilities over the past several decades with APRNs being highly valued and an integral part of the health care system. Because of the importance of APRNs in caring for the current and future health needs of patients, the education, accreditation, certification and licensure of APRNs need to be effectively aligned in order to continue to ensure patient safety while expanding patient access to APRNs.
